💊 Yasmin – Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill
Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two hormones:
- Drospirenone (3 mg) – a progestin
- Ethinylestradiol (0.03 mg) – an estrogen
These hormones work together to inhibit ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and alter the uterine lining, making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg or for a fertilized egg to implant.
✅ Indications:
- Contraception (birth control)
- May also be prescribed for:
- Acne
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms (off-label use)
📋 Dosage & Administration:
- Form: Oral tablet
- Regimen: One tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by 7 pill-free days (or placebo pills, depending on the pack)
- Start on the first day of the menstrual cycle or as advised by a healthcare provider
- Take at the same time each day
⚠️ Warnings & Side Effects:
- Common: Nausea, headache, breast tenderness, mood changes
- May slightly increase the risk of blood clots, especially in smokers over 35
- Not recommended for women with a history of:
- Thromboembolic disorders
- Liver disease
- Certain cancers
- Does not protect against STDs
