💊 Yaz – Low-Dose Oral Contraceptive for Birth Control & Hormonal Balance
Yaz is a combined oral contraceptive pill (COC) that contains two hormones:
- Drospirenone (3 mg) – a progestin
- Ethinylestradiol (0.02 mg) – a low-dose estrogen
It is designed to prevent pregnancy and is also commonly used to treat moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who choose oral contraception as their method of birth control.
✅ Indications:
- Prevention of pregnancy
- Treatment of:
- Moderate acne in women over 14
- PMDD (severe premenstrual symptoms like irritability, mood swings, bloating)
📋 Dosage & Administration:
- Form: Oral tablets (28-day pack)
- Regimen:
- 24 active hormone pills
- 4 placebo (reminder) pills
- Take one pill daily, at the same time each day, without interruption between packs
⚠️ Warnings & Side Effects:
- Common side effects: Nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, headache
- Slightly increased risk of blood clots, especially in smokers over 35
- Not suitable for women with a history of:
- Thrombosis
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Certain hormone-sensitive cancers
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
